Materials: Ochres / natural pigments and clays on eucalyptus bark, with sticks and raffia floss.
Subject: Namarodo, a kind of bogeyman figure, who, it is said, can be heard in the whistling winds as they go through its bones and sinews. They are frightening, but serve to warn children to obey their elders. Connects to the Dreamtime, and to the connection between the people and the natural world.
Size: 19.5” H, 8.5” W.
Artist: George Merwulenulu Djayhgurrnga (b.c. 1930). Member of The Kunwinjku (formerly written Gunwinggu) are Bininj (people), who live in West Arnhem Land to the east of Darwin, Northern Territory.
Dated: undated - from the middle of the 20th century.
Condition: age and insect damage to the paper label. Minor wear commensurate with age.
